Who Am I?
My name is Hannah James.
I am a General Engineering student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. I plan on majoring in Computer Engineering, with minors in Biomedical Engineering and Chemistry. I would like to use my undergraduate education as a precursor to work in the medical field.
Engineering is a fantastic area of study, because it calls for the expansion of the mind applied to many different kinds of problems with many different kinds of thinkers. There must be diversity in engineering - the athlete, nerd, mean girl, pretty boy - every person brings a new mindset, outlook, or experience that may be crucial for the creation of an efficient solution.
I want to study engineering because it combines math and science, which are my favorite subjects. I love math because it is always right, there is typically one answer to every problem. Chemistry is my passion. It literally explains the reason behind everything that is seen or felt.

Personal Engineering
I went to a private, Christian school for nine years. From grades K through 8, I never received a letter grade or a GPA. This experience shaped my morals and work habit, and developed in me a sense of curiosity and desire for knowledge. It taught me to work for more than a letter or number, but to strive to attain understanding. This is something that many places of education have yet to attain.
I have learned that in all areas of my life, the journey is often more important that the destination. I try to comprehend the material rather than just memorize enough to get the grade. I try to understand the problem before I try to solve it. This way of thinking is less traveled than others, and I know it will change the way I approach engineering in the future.

From presentations in engineering classes to late night study sessions at the library, exploding gases in Chemistry 1035 or waiting in the halls before lab, there are many events, environments, and equipment to explore at Virginia Tech.
